S2 B7 3 | Choosing the Right Cat Litter: What’s Best for Your Cat and Your Home?

Choosing the right cat litter can be confusing because there are several different types, each with its own pros and cons. The problem is that many cat owners aren’t sure which litter works best for their cat’s behavior and their home environment. For example, wooden pellets are great for cats that urinate a lot, especially if you use a two-layer litter box to let the pee drain while the pellets break down. Tofu litter is safe if your cat likes to nibble or play with it, but it gets mushy quickly when multiple cats use it and needs to be changed often.

Interestingly, each litter type has specific traits: bentonite clay tends to be dusty and requires frequent changing, and it can’t be flushed down the toilet. Silica gel absorbs moisture well, and since it traps urine as vapor, there's no need to scoop pee—just remove poop and replace the litter every 2-3 weeks due to odor buildup. At our cattery, we prefer wooden pellets for our Bengal cats because they pee a lot. But in our Bangkok home, silica litter works better since it’s cleaner and low-maintenance. Ultimately, picking the right litter depends on your cat's needs and your cleaning routine, making daily care easier and more efficient.
