Research raw cat food and sterilisation for more than ten minutes and you will meet one story. Australia, 2008. Cats losing coordination in their back legs, then their front. Some paralysed. Eighty-seven confirmed cases, and the food had been irradiated. Every word of that story is true. It deserves to be told properly, because the details are the difference between a technology that injured cats and a technology that protects them.
What happened
Between June 2008 and March 2009, veterinarians across Australia reported 87 cats with symmetrical hindlimb ataxia, progressing in the worst cases to paralysis of all four limbs. All had eaten one imported premium dry food. The recipe was not the problem. The import rule was. Because the food was made with fresh meat at low cooking temperatures, Australian quarantine required it to be irradiated on arrival at a minimum of 50 kilograys, with treatment reaching about 60 kGy, using gamma rays from a Cobalt-60 source. The requirement was unique to Australia. The identical food was sold untreated everywhere else in the world.

What 50 kGy of gamma does to dry cat food
Toxicology screened the recalled diet for more than 180 compounds and found no toxins. What it found was damage to the food itself. Vitamin A had fallen by 43 to 48 percent. Peroxides, the products of fat oxidation, had climbed, with studies of gamma treated dry diets recording increases up to 25-fold at the highest doses. Researchers had already reproduced the same neurological disease by feeding diets gamma treated in the mid 20s to mid 50s kGy range. The syndrome now has a name in the literature: feline irradiated diet-induced demyelination, FIDID, defined by food irradiated at around 50 to 55 kGy. Cats proved uniquely sensitive. Dogs eating the same food were unaffected, and researchers consider the condition species specific.
The strange, hopeful ending
The University of Wisconsin studied affected cats and found something remarkable: the nerve fibres themselves had survived. The damage was to myelin, the insulation around them. When the cats returned to normal food, the insulation regrew, and within three to four months they were neurologically normal. The work became a landmark in multiple sclerosis research, cited as the clearest proof that remyelination restores function. Australia, for its part, banned the irradiation of imported cat food in 2009.
Why this story does not describe an e-beam kill step
Three variables separate the Australian event from a modern raw food kill step, and every one of them runs in the opposite direction.
The machine. Australia's treatment used gamma rays from Cobalt-60, a radioactive isotope that emits continuously. An e-beam facility runs an electron accelerator on electricity, with no isotope on site and nothing emitting when the power is off.
The dose. FIDID is defined at 50 kGy and above, and experiments reproduced it from the mid 20s upward. A raw food kill step runs below 10 kGy, five times lower than the Australian mandate and inside the range international health bodies assessed as wholesome.
The chemistry. Gamma processing oxidises, and the peroxide climb was its signature. E-beam processing pushes chemistry toward reduction, not oxidation, so the rancidity mechanism at the centre of the Australian findings is absent.
The numbers that settle it
Mechanisms can be argued. Measurements cannot. Batch testing at an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory in Bangkok recently compared a Thai raw cat recipe before and after e-beam treatment under 10 kGy. Vitamin A: 121 micrograms RAE per 100 g before, 124 after. In Australia it fell by nearly half. Peroxide value: 0.12 before, 0.11 after. In Australia peroxides multiplied. Taurine: 222 before, 232 after. The two mechanisms blamed for FIDID, vitamin A collapse and fat oxidation, are both absent at kill step doses, and the paperwork shows it. The breeders at Bangkok Cats, a world championship cattery, treat that paperwork as the standard any treated food should meet.
The Australian cats were injured by a mandated overdose of the wrong technology, and their recovery taught neurology something valuable. The lesson for cat owners is narrower and more useful. Do not ask whether a food was treated. Ask with what, at what dose, and where the certificate is.
