The question most people never ask
Before the bag. Before the brand. Before the recommendation from a friend or the discount at the pet shop. There is a more fundamental question.
What is a cat actually built to eat?
Not what cats will eat. Not what cats seem to enjoy. What their biology, shaped over millions of years, was designed to process. That question has a clear answer. And once you understand it, everything else about feeding a cat makes a different kind of sense.
Cats are obligate carnivores
This is not a preference. It is a biological classification.
An obligate carnivore is an animal that cannot meet its nutritional requirements from plant matter. It requires specific nutrients found only in animal tissue, and its body has not developed the metabolic machinery to extract them from anything else.
Dogs are omnivores. Humans are omnivores. Cats are not. The distinction matters because it means that feeding a cat like a dog, or like a human, or according to the logic of any other species, will produce predictable nutritional failures over time.
Every system in the cat's body points in the same direction.
What the anatomy tells us
Start with the mouth. A cat's teeth have no flat molars for grinding plant matter. The back teeth, called carnassials, work like scissors. The front canines grip and puncture. There is no amylase in a cat's saliva — the enzyme that begins breaking down carbohydrates in the mouth. The mouth was designed to move protein through, not to begin digesting starch.
The stomach maintains a pH of around 1 to 2. That is extremely acidic, close to battery acid at its lower end. It breaks down raw meat and bone efficiently and kills the bacteria that come with raw animal protein. This is not a delicate digestive environment. It is a system built for prey.
The small intestine is short relative to body size, roughly four times body length, compared to seven times for humans and twenty times for cattle. Long intestines extract energy from plant matter through slow fermentation. Short intestines absorb dense animal protein quickly. The cat's gut was built for the second job.
The liver cannot synthesise taurine in meaningful quantities. Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid found almost exclusively in animal tissue. Without a continuous dietary supply, the heart muscle weakens, the retina degrades and reproductive capacity fails. There is no plant-based workaround for this.

Why dry food is a workaround
Dry kibble was not designed around feline biology. It was designed around manufacturing economics, shelf stability and convenience. Most commercial kibble contains between 30 and 50 percent carbohydrates. A cat's ancestral diet, small prey animals, contains roughly 2 to 4 percent carbohydrate.
Cats lack the salivary amylase to begin digesting starch in the mouth. They have lower intestinal amylase than omnivores. Their capacity to handle carbohydrates is limited, and high-carbohydrate diets are consistently associated with obesity, diabetes and chronic urinary tract disease in cats.
Dry food is also low in moisture. A cat eating prey gets around 70 percent of its water intake from food. A cat eating dry kibble gets almost none. Cats evolved in arid environments with low thirst drive. They were designed to get hydration from food, not from a water bowl. Chronic low-level dehydration is a persistent consequence of dry-food diets and contributes directly to kidney disease, the leading cause of death in domestic cats.
Finally, dry food is processed at high temperatures that destroy heat-sensitive nutrients including taurine. This is why synthetic taurine must be added back after manufacturing. The presence of added taurine on a label is not evidence of a complete diet. It is evidence that the original taurine was destroyed by the process that made the food.

What raw food provides
A raw diet built on animal protein provides what the cat's body was designed to receive. Raw meat is approximately 70 percent water, the same ratio as prey. A cat eating raw food meets most of its hydration needs through food, which is how its physiology was designed to work.
Taurine arrives in its natural form. Raw muscle meat, heart and organ meat contain taurine at levels the body can readily use. It has not been degraded by heat. It does not need to be added back synthetically.
The protein is highly bioavailable. Animal protein contains the full amino acid profile a cat requires, structured in ways the cat's digestive system was built to break down and absorb.
The carbohydrate load matches feline biology. Raw meat diets are naturally very low in carbohydrates. The pancreas, the liver and the metabolic systems that handle glucose are not under chronic stress.

The BARF model
BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. It is a feeding model built on the principle that cats should eat food that matches their evolutionary design.
A balanced BARF diet for cats typically consists of roughly 80 percent raw muscle meat, 10 percent raw organ meat (with half of that being liver), and 10 percent raw meaty bones. Some formulations include a small amount of vegetables or supplements such as fish oil, though cats derive no meaningful nutrition from plant matter and vegetables are not a requirement.
Balance is what makes raw feeding work. A raw diet built on muscle meat alone is not complete. The organ component supplies taurine, vitamin A, B vitamins and other nutrients that muscle meat alone cannot provide. Getting the ratios right is what separates a complete diet from an incomplete one.
Commercial raw and freeze-dried raw foods that meet AAFCO or FEDIAF standards provide a balanced BARF-style formulation without requiring the owner to calculate ratios manually. They are a practical starting point for most cat owners.
Common objections
What about bacteria?
A cat's stomach pH of 1 to 2 is specifically adapted to handle the bacterial load that comes with raw animal protein. The transit time through the digestive system is fast, limiting the window for bacterial growth. A healthy cat with a healthy gut handles raw food the way its biology intended.
Sourcing matters. Human-grade raw meat from reputable suppliers carries far lower bacterial risk than the assumption of risk that often dominates this conversation. Problems arise from poor sourcing or food left at room temperature for extended periods, not from raw feeding as a practice.
Is it balanced?
A properly formulated raw diet, whether home-prepared with correct ratios or from a commercial raw food that meets nutritional standards, is nutritionally complete. Balance is a question of formulation, not of whether the food is raw. A poorly formulated kibble is also nutritionally incomplete.
Is it expensive?
Raw food costs more per meal than entry-level dry kibble. It costs less than many veterinary bills associated with the chronic conditions that dry-food diets contribute to. The comparison depends on which costs you include in the calculation.
How to start
Most cats transition well to raw food when the change is gradual. A sudden switch often causes digestive upset not because raw food is wrong for them, but because the digestive system needs time to adjust after years of processing a different type of food.
The standard approach is to introduce raw food alongside the existing diet, increasing the raw proportion over two to four weeks while monitoring stool consistency and appetite. Some cats transition in days. Others take longer.
